About

Monica At Heliotrope Ridge

I paint both distant vistas and close-up views of the natural world.  I’m motivated by patterns of color and texture found outdoors, and intrigued by variations in scale from tiny to vast. Outdoors I look closely at big views as well as small scenes, taking many reference photos that I use in varying degrees of detail and accuracy to make acrylic paintings. My work is influenced by my thoughts about mountains, clouds, sky, water, snow, wildflowers, birds, lichens, and rocks, among other fascinating subjects, all mostly found outdoors in Alaska.

I often begin painting by creating textures or patterns using various acrylic mediums, before applying acrylic paint with brushes and palette knives. I also carve rubber stamps and make stencils, which I use to create patterns of color and texture. Layers of paint are added and also sanded away, based on my concepts of what looks interesting and pleasing, and at times hopefully mysterious or ancient.

I first came to Alaska as an exploration geologist looking for minerals in remote parts of the state. I’ve lived in Anchorage and Juneau, and I enjoy traveling in Alaska and other parts of the world, always looking for subjects to interpret in paint.

My art education includes workshops taught by nationally known artists including Suzanne Northcott, Stephen Quiller, Mary Todd Beam, and Michael Schlicting, as well as classes taught by Alaskan artists including Linda Infante Lyons, Kesler Woodward, Rita Pfenninger, Betty Atkinson, and Paula Dickey. I’ve also learned much by painting regularly with other artists over the years. Mostly I’ve taught myself, through many happy hours of painting and sketching, as well as looking at the work of other artists.
